The Changwon City Council held the 144th plenary session at 10 a.m. on the 5th and passed a proposal to expand transportation and facility infrastructure to revitalize the NC Dinos baseball culture.
According to the minutes of the meeting, Park Seung-yeop, a member of the People's Power City Council (Yangdeok 1 and 2, Synthetic 2, Guam 1 and 2, Bongam-dong), explained the proposal, saying, "In the era of 10 million Korean professional baseball, the revitalization of the NC Dinos baseball culture is contributing greatly to the localization of Changwon and the revitalization of the local economy."
Referring to the KTX from Masan, which is the last timetable at 9:43 p.m., the number of parking lots at Changwon NC Park, and the aging Masan baseball stadium facilities, Park said, "The NC club is a professional baseball team based in Gyeongnam, so I recommend Gyeongsangnam-do's great interest and active financial support to take root as a regional team."
The proposal included extending the last high-speed train hours from Masan, including KTX and SRT, after 10 p.m., establishing and adjusting intercity bus routes and supporting NC-only rental buses, improving facilities such as Masan Baseball Stadium, establishing a parking lot using idle land at the Masan Baseball Center around Changwon NC Park, operating shuttle buses directly from major transportation hubs and Changwon NC Park, relocating the Masan Station Complex Transfer Center at Masan Express Bus Terminal, and forming a cooperative group of Gyeongsangnam-do, Changwon City and NC clubs. The proposal was passed at the plenary session with the approval of 42 out of 45 incumbent lawmakers.
Recently, the NC club and Changwon City have been in an invisible conflict over the issue of their hometown. While the stadium was closed for more than two months after the spectator's death at Changwon NC Park on March 29, the NC club continued its away life. In the process, complaints about Changwon City were revealed, and eventually, Lee Jin-man, CEO of NC, said in a press conference on the 30th of last month, "Maintaining the status quo is not the answer. I think it's time to seriously seek an improved direction."
Still, NC was not 100% focused on the relocation. NC, which requested Changwon City to improve the environment, said, "If you provide the most specific and immediate options for the situation we requested, we will continue to seriously discuss with Changwon City."
Afterwards, the city of Changwon disclosed NC's requirements on the 5th. According to the Newsis report, NC requested 21 things, including improving the facilities of the baseball stadium, manufacturing additional electronic boards, expanding parking lots, expanding public transportation routes, establishing new urban railways (trams), increasing KTX, and expanding support for the city. "We are closely reviewing the possibility of accepting NC's requirements," a Changwon city official said. "We may not be able to accept the acceptable parts and the unacceptable parts."
However, in the process, some media outlets said that NC pressured Changwon City to build a tram. NC disclosed the requirements and said, "We recognize that the establishment of an urban railway has many difficulties in cost and promotion. We recognize it as being planned by the city, and we hope it will proceed as planned."
Some say that NC's request is a paving the way to move the location if it does not accept it. Then, NC said in a statement, "We have never made such a request on the premise of relocating the Yeongoji. It is part of responsible management judgment and negotiations to improve the current situation and maintain a lasting win-win relationship with Changwon City, and claims such as "building a justification for relocation" are groundless."
"At the time of the club's bid, Changwon City made a promise to 'make all administrative support possible to support the club that does not lag behind other regions and to the level that the club can operate independently, especially stadium usage fees,' but it was not fulfilled," NC said. "As a result, NC paid a total of 33 billion won in stadium usage fees. This request is a proposal to fulfill the promise made when the club was attracted."
He continued, "The NC's request to Changwon City is only a negotiation proposal for sustainable cooperation with local communities, not unilateral coercion or pressure."
In this situation, the city council came forward and adopted a proposal to urge NC to expand its transportation and facility infrastructure, giving NC a little more power.
